Looking at how social media has evolved over the years especially from web 1.0 to 2.0. People can now share thoughts and ideas with whoever is interested. I would predict that social media would be more widespread amongst the globe, this would be due to developing infrastructure and technology in 3rd world countries.
I would expect more social media sites to be up and running to compete with Facebook such as the likes of Google+ as seen in this article http://techcrunch.com/2010/12/05/social-networking-future/. I wouldn't be surprised if Twitter changes and becomes more like Facebook in a way where you would have more applications.
More and more businesses would turn to facebook and other social networking sites to promote and advertise their business. This would help cut costs, but also at the same time potray a pro-active role in responding to their customers and listening to their feedback to improve their businesses. As the market for smartphones and tablets are rapidly increasing and developing in its performance, social media is more accessible to people on the go as there are currently apps which allow you to connect to Facebook, Twitter & Google+. People would not be constrained with having the need to carry a computer/laptop with them
